This quote from David Byrne’s book ‘How Music Works’ hits on a crucial point for artists of all kinds in the world today:
“It can often seem that those in power don’t want us to enjoy making things for ourselves. They’d prefer to establish a cultural hierarchy that devalues our amateur efforts and encourages consumption rather than creation.”
Part of this is the equation of ‘value equals money’, a fundamental perversion of what really matters. They’d ‘prefer’ you make money the measure of all things.
