Slowpocalypse Now, and Now, and Now

In apocalyptic fiction, it’s all over with rather quickly and then the story begins, but in the real world, apocalypses involve bureaucracies and require permits and take a long time to unfold. it often seems to me that the biggest suspension of disbelief required by fiction is timing. Things never seem to happen in fiction in the right amount of time.
