globalization and the first world

I remember being surprised, when I lived in Colombia may years ago, that the coffee available to locals was both expensive and lower-grade than the coffee they exported to the first world. By now that same experience has migrated North as well. Case in point, New Zealand, where locals can barely afford lamb even though they are surrounded on all sides by the creatures. New Zealand lamb is cheaper in California than it is down here.
