A friend of mine has a bumper sticker on her car that says ‘feminism is the radical notion that women are people’.
I don’t think it’s too much to ask from fiction writers that their female characters be human beings. Especially in this day and age, as my grandmother, who was a radical feminist in the nineteen twenties, used to say. We’ve come a long way, baby, or have we?
I used to be more forgiving of stuff. You could make allowances for an older generation of writers who couldn’t help themselves, considering their era and all that, but not anymore. There are no excuses.
Hell, even soylent green was people before women were, in science fiction. Your female characters can be sexy and all that, but not sexy first and sexy only. The sexiest woman is a real woman. For sure.
