Recommended: Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo

Hallucinogenic, disorienting, haunted and haunting, this is a book that makes you feel like you’re running a fever. Suffused and overflowing with feeling yet never manipulative or moralizing, Rulfo puts you on the inside looking out, with no distinction between the living and the dead as if that status makes no difference at all. Good and evil likewise are equally weak and ultimately ineffective, neither able to hold their own over time. There’s something immortal about this short novel, as if it were narrated by very important ghosts carrying a message that must be heard and the prose is as marvellous and beautiful as those great rocky landscapes of classic Western movies.
