Newton’s third law, For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, has it’s counterpart in the social as well as the material world. This is often overlooked in the idealisms of every side, liberal and conservative, radical and reactionary. Wherever one ideology makes a move in its direction, the opposite ideology counters in equal measure.
If “secular” society seems to be progressing, “spiritual” society responds to the same degree. Perhaps the surge we seem to be experiencing in fundamentalism, be it the extremists in the Islamic world or those in the Christian, are echoes of the rapid technological and scientific advances occurring at the same time. We can’t seem to have one without the other.
Prometheus was not chained as punishment for stealing fire from the gods. The chain was the inevitable companion and consequence of his invention. In our time its equivalent is the widespread use of social media by medieval-minded terrorists.
Anyone who thinks they can push the world in their own desired direction is delusional. The world pushes back.
