Fragments from books that don’t exist

It was in late October, 1996. I was still working for the man in those days, endlessly entering data into a sparkling terminal, information that would worm its way into the hands of authority figures, no doubt for use in capturing the world’s most dangerous felons or else prevent some disadvantaged poor people from buying candy or tampons. The world we knew back then was one in which the powerful used their positions for hardly anything more than harming the weak and defenseless, simply because they could. They talked about big ideas, pretended they had morality and principles, but in the end what it came down to was kicking people who were already down. You judge them by the outcomes, not by the sounds emitted from their pious caucasian mouth-holes. What has really changed since then? As far as I can tell, not a god damn thing.
